What to Expect During a Checkup
During a regular checkup, you can usually expect these standard procedures:
- A professional cleaning. Dr. Tuckett or our dental hygienist will perform a cleaning using a special instrument, known as a hand scaler. We will scrape the surface of the tooth above and below the gums. This removes plaque and tartar build-up that can cause cavities, gum disease, and other problems. Regular brushing and flossing are simply not enough to remove all the plaque and tartar from your teeth. We may also floss and polish your teeth to check for gum disease, and remove minor stains.
- Education. After your cleaning, we will discuss any hygiene problems and review proper brushing and flossing techniques. An excellent education can lead to excellent oral health, and ultimately a better life.
- X-rays. X-rays are an excellent tool to help diagnose and prevent problems that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Depending on your age and other risk factors, Dr. Tuckett may want to perform an X-ray to diagnose decay, bone deterioration, abscesses, tumors, and impacted teeth. X-rays can help us catch conditions before they become serious problems. New technology has led to better image quality. We can develop a more precise treatment plan than ever before by locating tiny fractures and cavities.
- A full examination. Dr. Tuckett will perform a comprehensive examination of your teeth, gums, and jaw. Our older patients may also receive a quick oral cancer screening.
The Benefits of Preventive Dentistry
Our goal is to help you maintain your oral health, and identify problems before they lead to serious complications. Preventive dentistry can greatly reduce your risk of developing cavities, gingivitis, periodontitis, and other dental problems. Poor oral health has been linked to heart disease, osteoporosis, respiratory disease, and cancer. In many cases, a routine checkup can help significantly reduce your risk of developing these problems.
