Teeth Cleaning Queen Creek, AZ
At our dental practice, we are dedicated to helping our patients maintain a healthy and beautiful smile. The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), strongly recommends that patients receive a professional dental cleaning every six months. A professional dental cleaning at least twice a year can drastically improve your oral health. They will also reinforce strong oral health care practices at home. During your cleaning, our dental hygienist will review proper at-home brushing and flossing techniques.
A professional cleaning focuses of the surfaces of your teeth that exist above and slightly below the gums. Our hygienist uses a device, known as a hand scaler, to remove plaque and tartar, and prevent decay. Patients who practice proper oral hygiene will typically have a comfortable experience. Those who do not may experience some pain or discomfort. We also polish your teeth to improve cosmetics and remove minor stains. After the procedure, we floss your teeth and look for signs of periodontal (gum) disease.
Periodontal disease is an infection caused by bacteria that exists in plaque. In response to this infection, your immune system will produce toxins to eliminate the bacteria. However, these toxins can also damage the tissue, ligaments, and bone that surround your teeth.
The beginning stage of periodontal disease is known as gingivitis. Gingivitis is characterized by red and swollen gums that tend to bleed easily. If left untreated, the disease will enter the second stage known as periodontitis. During periodontitis, deep pockets will form between the gums and teeth. The infection will spread to the connective ligaments and bone below the gums and could cause your teeth to loosen or even fall out.
Periodontal disease is easily avoidable with proper oral hygiene and regular cleanings. If Dr. Tuckett notices preliminary signs of periodontal disease during your cleaning, we will give you proper instructions to stop the infection. If the disease progresses to periodontitis, we may need to perform a procedure known as scaling and root planing. This deep cleaning is similar to a regular cleaning but also removes plaque and tartar from the root surfaces of the tooth.
Dental Cleanings For Children
Preventative procedures, such as dental cleanings, are especially important for children. Professional cleanings can halt bacteria build-up and ensure a lifetime of healthy teeth. During a child’s cleaning, we also perform a fluoride treatment. Fluoride can strengthen the enamel, and even reverse minor instances of decay.
Without professional dental cleanings, your child could suffer from tooth decay, periodontal disease, and premature tooth loss. Premature tooth loss is a serious issue, even for primary (baby) teeth. When a primary tooth is lost too soon, the other teeth will compensate for the open space. This could skew or prevent the permanent tooth from the eruption. In the instance of premature tooth loss, a special procedure or appliance may be necessary.
During a cleaning, your child will also be taught how to properly brush and floss their teeth. If established at a young age, these habits will follow them into adulthood, and likely reduce their risk of future complications.
